Jewel of Africa CEO Speaks to Youths at 2024 Kectil International Conference
Jewel of Africa's CEO, Ms. Rashmi Sharma, recently addressed over 300 youths at the Knowles Educational and Charitable Trust for International Leadership (Kectil) International Conference in Zambia. The theme of her discussion, centered on "Local Development and Ethical Use of Natural Resources," highlighted Zambia's rich gemstone diversity, boasting the finest emeralds and over twenty-five distinct colours of tourmalines, and many others including amethysts, aquamarines, citrine, garnets, moonstone, quartz, and turquoise.
Ms. Sharma emphasised the importance of adding value to local mineral resources, particularly gemstones, to foster development in communities and its potential to contribute significantly to Zambia's economic growth. She highlighted Jewel of Africa's efforts in training women and youth in jewellery manufacturing, providing them with valuable income-generating skills. Additionally, through collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Jewel of Africa has opened doors to artisanal training and employment opportunities for young refugees and host community youth.
Encouraging young people to explore sustainable ways of managing and adding value to natural mineral resources, Ms. Sharma pointed out the potential for creating long-term, beneficial business ventures through value addition. The conference, which took place on May 3rd and 4th, 2024, brought together accomplished speakers and more than 300 youths from diverse backgrounds. It aimed to provide a platform for learning from experienced professionals and leaders across various sectors, including entrepreneurship, financial literacy, ESG, and leadership, while also facilitating networking opportunities among passionate peers.
